I fell in love with the X-Men when I read this! Review by Ryan

I'll admit, I was never a huge fan of the X-Men. I enjoyed the 90s cartoon series (if just for the intro), I found the movies hit or miss, and I never really read many of their comics, except major crossovers from recent publication. However... I picked this one up a few months back. Despite being the fifth Epic Collection, it's an excellent starting point for newcomers. You see, despite the X-Men having existed since 1963, they had practically been cancelled in 1970, and the issues up to 1975 were all reprints of earlier adventures, owed mainly to lagging sales and a lack of interest in the mutant team by readers.
That all changed when a new breed of mutants joined the X-Men. Wolverine, Colossus, Storm, Nightcrawler and others took up the challenge and joined original members Cyclops and Jean Grey to take the fight to villains such as Magento, the Sentinels and the Juggernaut. The best part of this volume comes with the introduction of the alien Shi'ar, as well as Jean's transformation into the Pheonix, which would one day (but not in this volume) have deadly consequences for the team. This is the perfect start for fans, or just people unfamiliar with the X-Men. An absolute must have! (Posted on 03/02/2021)
