Quality
As stated, this is by far the shortest of not just the early Spider-Man Epics, but the shortest entire Spidey volume so far! That being said, this shorter volume contains some hugely important moments from Peter Parker's life. For starters, he combats the Green Goblin in two issues, with the villain finally revealing who's under the mask. The Rhino, Shocker and an all-new Vulture debut, with favourites such as Kraven the Hunter and the Lizard reappearing in this pages.
Not only that, but this is the first issue of the John Romita Sr. era of art, alongside Stan Lee's writing. This, in my opinion, is a much better looking time in Spider-Man's history, as the character's all look a lot more lifelike and akin to the how they appear in more recent comics. Aunt May isn't a ninety year old woman anymore, and Peter is no longer so plain looking. Coincidentally, this is also the volume that Peter becomes a lot more bearable, even if he's thrown into another love triangle. That's right: Mary Jane Watson is here! And she's making her presence (and clearly dating the comic as late 60s) with her unique lingo and personality.
This Epic comes with two large, if slightly unremarkable, Amazing Spider-Man Annuals. The first features Spidey receiving an initiation to join the Avengers, and the second involves him teaming up with the Human Torch in Hollywood. Finally, one of the most iconic storylines in Marvel history takes place with 'Spider-Man No More!', which features the first appearance of Wilson Fisk: the Kingpin of Crime, as well as the death of a longstanding cast member. This Epic does have it all, it's just a shame it's just so short! (Posted on 03/02/2021)
