Fan of the 90s animated show? This may be for you Review by Ryan

The fifth Spider-Man Epic Collection collects its fair share of issues, with a ride range of stories, twists, and villains. It starts with the fifth Amazing Spider-Man Annual, which delves deep into the lives of Peter's parents, Richard and Mary. Taking a trip to the north Africa, our hero is determined to prove his parents were not traitors to the USA. An interesting read, with a surprise villain you won't see coming. Next, an extended arc (covering roughly a third of the Epic) sees Kingpin, Silvermane, Shocker, the Lizard and Spidey involved in the 'Secret of the Petrified Tablet'. Any fans of the iconic 90s animated show will recognize this arc, as well as the consequences it will have on its antagonist.
Tablet aside, we also see the introduction of the Prowler, who would become a mainstay in Spider-Man's world, as well as the return of underused villains such as Electro and the Chameleon. The final includes the introduction of the Kingpin's wife, Vanessa, and a crime war between Fisk and the mysterious Schemer, who wants nothing more than to see Kingpin's empire crumble. This multi-issue story contains an excellent twist, which leaves its mark on Fisk (I'll say no more).
Stan Lee's writing of Peter greatly improves: he's no longer the uptight git he was in the early volume of the Epic Collection, and John Romita's art really compliments this. His relationship with Gwen improves (there's only ONE innocent misunderstanding this time 'round), and much of his supporting cast are better fleshed out. Very much looking forward to the next installment. (Posted on 04/02/2021)
