Rico Rival

Rico Rival is a Filipino artist who went to work for the US market in the 1970s. He drew for DC's horror titles in the 1970s, such as 'The Unexpected' and 'House of Mystery'. For Marvel, he did the graphic novel 'Prisoner of Zenda' with a script by Anthony Hope and Doug Moench. He also made comic adaptions of 'Escape from the Planet of the Apes' and 'Michael Moorcock's Hawkmoon: The Jewel in the Skull'. In the 1980s, he worked in the US animation field, doing background designs for 'BraveStarr' and character designs for 'Transformers: The Movie'. He also did inks on several titles for First Publishing, including 'Grimjack', 'Hawkmoon' and 'Judah the Hammer'. In 1989, he illustrated the graphic novel 'Omni Men', scripted by Steve Perry, at Blackthorne. He eventually returned to The Philippines, where he continued to work in the comics field. Among his recent graphic novels is 'The Heavenly Man', a biography of Brother Yun, a leader of the underground church in China.
