Mixing together various Supergirl aspects in a new direction Review by Aryeh

One thing that worried me about Rebirth was that the really cool New 52 directions would be forgotten. I really enjoyed how New 52 Supergirl did things, with Supergirl's emotional state in regards to being an alien on Earth. Superman was a baby on Earth, but Supergirl was already a teenager, so that allows for great storytelling. Thankfully, Supergirl Rebirth continues with this. While New 52 dealt with her anger, Rebirth's first storyline deals with her missing her old live in Argo City in a very direct way. The Zor-El version of the Cyborg Superman from New 52 returns, allowing good connection with that run. However, things are explained so that a new reader could still jump in and understand (although I do recommend the previous run nonetheless). It's a good follow up to that open plot thread, giving Supergirl the emotional confrontation against robotic beings that essentially wear the bodies of her loved ones. In addition, Supergirl Rebirth is mixing together various Supergirl aspects to forge a new direction. In this case, it's being inspired by the Supergirl TV show in that it's brought in the DEO (although with a different leader, that being Director Chase). Also, the Danvers as her parents; this time younger to go with it being a teenager Supergirl instead of adult like the show, so we can see that while it's brought in synergistic TV elements, it's adapted them to fit with the established comic situation. There's also the sassy tv version of Cat Grant, who is always more fun than you expect. All this adds up to a nice mixture and nice status quo for Supergirl's story, going forward using various elements of the Supergirl concept. Steve Orlando is a writer to watch in Rebirth (check out JL of America for more of his good work). As for the art, we had a little bit of Emanuela Lupacchino art in the Rebirth issue which was good, as this artist usually is. Brian Ching's arc for the next number of issues wasn't brilliant, but not terrible, so it didn't deter me like some artists can deter a reader. Overall, this story is worth a buy if you like Supergirl. She's my favourite hero so I'm game for getting more. (Posted on 04/06/2017)
