Spider-Man reaches new heights under Lee and Romita! Review by Ryan

This is perhaps by favourite of the early Spider-Man Epics. Following on from the events of 'Spider-Man No More!' in the previous volume, our hero is faces one of his greatest battles in the form of Doctor Octopus, who moves in with Aunt May. This is a rather humorous segment, as she again misinterprets his earlier kidnapping of her in the first volume, and happily allows her nephew's enemy to live under her roof. This arc has public suspicion in Spider-Man at an all time high, as the wall crawler joins Doc Ock and takes on the jungle hero Ka-Zar.
Following on from this, Spidey battles the Spider Slayers once again, the scheming Kingpin, two Vultures, the Inhuman Medusa and Mysterio. This volume also firmly places Gwen Stacy as the true love interest of Peter Parker, ditching Mary Jane to the role of supporting character alongside Harry Osborn and, occasionally, Flash Thompson. The out-of-costume moments due sometimes return to Lee/Ditko levels of annoyance, especially as Peter and Gwen's relationship deepens.
However, perhaps the best part of this volume is the two Spectacular Spider-Man Magazine issues that comes with it. The first is a rather long story about Spidey clashing with a corrupt politician, but the second issue is the true standout of the Epic. As the title proclaims, "The Goblin Lives"! Norman Osborn is back as the Green Goblin, and this 58 page special showcases why he truly is the greatest member of Spider-Man's rogues gallery. A beautifully drawn, masterfully written epic story brings both Spidey and the Goblin to new heights! (Posted on 03/02/2021)
