Many debuts but frustrating stories! Review by Ryan

I've been a huge Spider-Man fan for years, but never really got around to reading his early appearances, with the exception of Amazing Fantasy #15. This first Epic Collection contains many first appearances from classic Spidey villains, such as Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Sandman, Mysterio, the Vulture and so many more. Lee's writing is good when it comes to the battles, but is often found lacking in Peter Parker's everyday life. The love triangle between Peter, Liz Allen and Betty Brant is incredibly tedious, as Peter never seems to be able to do anything right, and had me wishing Mary Jane Watson would turn up to create a sense of normalcy. Aunt May is also a cause for annoyance: she is often found dying, or collapsing, or requiring sedation, and this becomes very tiring after seeing it happen every few issues. Perhaps the worst part about this is Peter himself. I don't know about anyone else, but during the early Lee run he comes across as being very unlikeable, often leading along either Liz or Betty.
That being said, this first Epic is a great start for Spider-Man fans. Perhaps the best issue in this volume is the Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1, which features the creation of the Sinister Six. Aunt May somewhat redeems herself as unwittingly being kidnapped by Doctor Octopus, all the time thinking he's inviting her for tea, and scolding Betty Brant for judging a man because he has metal arms. Lee was certainly a good man in how he wrote comedy. The sheer amount of super villains, as well as fan favourite debuts such as Jonah Jameson, Flash Thompson and Ned Leeds makes this a must have for Spidey fans. (Posted on 03/02/2021)
