When Stan Lee turned the super hero world on its head by replacing Avengers founders Iron Man, Thor, Giant-Man and Wasp with a trio of former super villains, readers thought he'd gone mad. As it turned out, the only thing crazy was how insanely exciting the lineup of Captain America, Hawkeye, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch would become! And the hits kept coming - with the first appearances of the Collector, the Swordsman and the Sons of the Serpent; the Black Widow's AVENGERS debut; and Giant-Man's transformation into Goliath! And despite the unbelievable heights the Avengers had reached under Lee, the sky was the limit when he passed the title to Roy Thomas! Collecting AVENGERS (1963) #21-40.All Ages

Roy Thomas moves the Avengers into one of their greatest eras! Review by Ryan

The team of Captain America, Hawkeye, and the twins Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch is a far cry from the early days of the Avengers. There is constant bickering, often between Cap and Hawkeye or Quicksilver and Hawkeye (Clint Barton's basically a huge pain in the head in these issues) over the leadership of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Lee, as if knowing that the Avengers were in need of fresh villains, starts off by creating Power-Man (no, not Luke Cage), a man imbued with the same abilities of Wonder Man. A battle with the racist Sons of the Serpents follows the debut of the Collector, and Lee's last issue brings in the Living Laser, a man with personal motivations for what he is doing. The first half also features the return of Swordsman and Kang the Conqueror, the Avengers' first clash with Doctor Doom, and the arrival of the Black Widow, Hawkeye's love interest. As Lee's run comes to end, Giant-Man, now under the name Goliath, and the Wasp return to the team, with the former experiencing a tragedy to his very body.
Roy Thomas takes over with the last few issues, and immediately goes about making his mark on the team. Hercules joins the team, Namor the Sub-Mariner goes after the Cosmic Cube, and the Mad Thinker strikes! This is the start of perhaps my favourite run of the Avengers (with the exception of Roger Stern), as the writing is more focused on the dynamics inside the team, as well as a more three dimensional approach to the members. A must buy for Avengers fans! (Posted on 03/02/2021)
