The Mad Titan is on a quest for Death! The Silver Surfer may believe he has killed Thanos, but the terrible truth is that the Mad Titan still lives - and that's bad news for the Marvel Universe, because Thanos' great love has sent him on a space-faring search for the Infinity Gems! Meanwhile, the Surfer tackles a deadly life-form and deals with the madness of Dynamo City! But when Thanos returns from his quest, glove on hand and hell-bent for revenge, do the Surfer, Galactus and Drax the Destroyer stand a chance? And whose side will Mephisto be on? Norrin Radd must face his past as events build to a confrontation that sets the stage for the cosmic epic known as INFINITY GAUNTLET! Starlin's run is the epitome of the Silver Surfer Review by Ryan

Jim Starlin is one of my favourite Marvel writers. Whether it be on Captain Marvel or Warlock, he often manages to separate himself from the rest of Marvel's writers, and create a story that is both incredibly unique, and at the same time a clear product of his work. Silver Surfer is no difference, as you will see if you pick this up. The volume starts with the conclusion of the 'Lifeform' event, which raged across the annuals for the Punisher, Daredevil and the Incredible Hulk. Without giving too much away, Surfer's battle with this organic monstrosity ends on an incredibly dark note, and one that has not been followed up on since.
With the Annual finished and the main series started, Surfer is stranded on Dynamo City, and experiences a series of challenges as he tries to escape. As the series progresses, the Herald of Galactus encounters Adam Warlock, Gamora and Pip the Troll in Soulworld, as Thanos teams up with the demon Mephisto. The highlights of this volume include three issues. The first, Silver Surfer #50, features a battle with Thanos that takes a trippy turn, but is both visually stunning and thought provoking. The other two issues, Thanos Quest #1 and 2, are one of my favourite limited series stories of all time. Thanos, on a mission to gather all six Infinity Gems (they're GEMS, not STONES), fights both physical and mental battles against six incredibly powerful beings. A must read! (Posted on 04/02/2021)
