Roy Thomas' run continues in style as John Buscema debuts! Review by Ryan

An excellent start to this Epic Collection shows the team face the combined might of Diablo and Dragon Man. With Captain America off doing his own thing, the team relies on its communication and trust in place of leadership. Unfortunately, the brief membership of Hercules (who is often depicted as one of Earth's strongest beings) leads to some problems. Often he is written out of the issue in contrived ways, as his power could almost always defeat the villain(s) of that particular issue with no problem, and so it is with some relief when he leaves the team at the start of the second half of the Epic. However, that is not to say these first few issues are a bad thing, far from it! The relationship between Hawkeye and Black Widow deepens, as the Russian spy is sent behind enemy lines by SHIELD.
Roy Thomas' writing, combined with John Buscema's artwork, creates some amazing moments in this volume, with the Avengers taking on the Super Adaptoid, Whirlwind, the Red Guardian and the mutant supremacist Magneto! The best part of this epic is last few issues, as the Grim Reaper makes his debut, fueled by a mysterious hatred for the team, while a new Black Knight emerges. A new Masters of Evil are formed, and we see the introduction of one of Marvel's most iconic villains: Ultron. This leads to unexpected twists and turns, as well as the question of why Ultron wants the Avengers dead. In the last issue the team are sent back in time to WWII, and Captain America must experience the death of his partner Bucky once more.
Finally, the two Avengers Annuals that are provided are well worth it. The first pits every member of the Avengers (including Iron Man and Thor) against a team of super villains assembled by the Mandarin. The second follows the current Avengers after their trip to WWII, as they find themselves in a present not their own...
Definitely worth the read, as Thomas' run keeps getting better and better! (Posted on 03/02/2021)
