An excellent, if a bit same-y, start for Earth's Mightiest Heroes Review by Ryan

The first twenty issues of the Avengers run are great, if a little similar in their approach to the team. The first two issues revolve around the villain tricking the Avengers into fighting one of their own number: the Hulk. With the arrival of Captain America in the fourth issue, the next dozen installments focusses mainly on the team's battle with the Masters of Evil, led by Baron Heinrich Zemo, Cap's WWII enemy. While they do not feature in every issue, the conflict with the Master's does become quite repetitive, and I was certainly glad when it was over.
The first three quarters of this Epic Collection feature the iconic team of Thor, Iron Man, Giant-Man, the Wasp and Captain America (as well the Hulk originally), but these issues struggle with their villains. Many of the group's early villains (Loki, Namor, Enchantress, Mole Man, Radioactive Man, etc.) are not new, and have fought various members of the group (as well as the Fantastic Four) in the past. Only a few new villains are introduced, but none other than Kang the Conqueror and Baron Zemo stand out to me.
While the most iconic lineup may contain Iron Man and Thor, the series doesn't really reach a new height until the last five issues, with the arrival of Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch and Hawkeye; three former Marvel villains. Stripping the team of all but Captain America, the 'New Avengers' start on very shaky ground but, as the series progresses over time, the writing certainly gets better. Like the first sixteen issues, there is a lack of new, exciting villains (with the exception of Swordsman, who debuts in the penultimate issue).
I was never a huge fan of the writing of Stan Lee, or the art of Jack Kirby (and, to an extent, Don Heck, who succeeds Kirby in this volume), but this first Epic Collection is chock full of battles, memorable first encounters, and a status quo shakeup in the form the of the New Avengers. Thoroughly recommend! (Posted on 03/02/2021)
