A somewhat tepid start to Spencer's era Review by Ryan

When Nick Spencer was announced as the new writer for the Amazing Spider-Man, two things came into my head. For one, I was a big fan of Dan Slott's decade-long run on the series, and I thoroughly enjoyed much of what he brought to the table when he was writing Spidey. So when it was announced that Slott would be ending his run in 2018, I wondered how anyone would be able to carry on with what he left. Secondly, Nick Spencer's run on Steve Rogers: Captain America (and subsequently 2017's Secret Empire) was incredibly controversial. Having read both, I enjoyed the premise of Hydra Captain America, but found the payoff very lacking. So needless to say, I was somewhat concerned when he took over the reigns.
Having said that.... this isn't a bad start to the Spencer era. The writing is good, there's a creepy new villain in the form of Kindred, and nothing seems too different. It's a slow start, with a somewhat standard Spidey story in the this first volume but, nevertheless, not a bad one. (Posted on 19/02/2021)
