An Excellent Collection Review by Jeremy

Marvel's Epic Collections represent great value and, in this case, a unique opportunity to see how an iconic Marvel character has been developed.

The collection opens with Moon Knight's very first appearance in Werewolf By Night and closes with the first four issues of his own comic book. In between these two runs comes a very varied collection of guest spots, which are interesting but don't really advance the character all that much (the Marvel Two-in-One one is mostly forgettable). When we get to the back-up strips from Hulk magazine, though, things become a lot more compelling. The later Hulk magazine stories in particular are excellent and get to the driven rather obsessive nature of the character very well. Even this early, there are hints that Marc Spector is having a hard time keeping his multiple identities straight as Marlene - a fascinating character in her own right - teases Marc about just who she's speaking to at a couple of points in the later issues. By the time we get to the book length stuff, the character is hitting its stride and Moench's writing and Sienkiewicz's art seem like they were always made for each other.

I recommend this collection as a great insight into the birth and evolution of a genuinely intriguing character and a collection of good stories in their own right. Well worth having. (Posted on 02/12/2016)
