Transformed by the Super-Soldier Serum from a 98-pound weakling into Captain America, Steve Rogers led the charge to liberate the world from the Axis powers! But before World War II's end, an accident left him frozen in suspended animation and his sidekick, Bucky, dead. The world kept turning for decades - and when the Avengers finally resuscitated him, Steve Rogers stepped into a life he no longer recognized. He was a man out of time, tormented by the death of his partner - but no less committed to the cause of fighting evil in all its forms! In this Epic Collection, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby bring you the rebirth of an American icon. The rebirth of Captain America! Not a great start for the Captain, but gradually improves Review by Ryan

The first Epic Collection in the Captain America line leaves a lot to be desired. The first two issues (featuring a fake Cap in Strange Tales and his official Silver Age debut in the Avengers) are a steady start, as well as a full-length issue in Tales of Suspense #58, where Cap takes on Iron Man. However, with the next issue, the wheels come off, and Steve Rogers is reduced to a mere ten pages an issue, as he is forced to share a comic with Tony Stark. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, the volume provides plenty of issues to make up for the shortness of each individual publication, but it often feels like these issues are rushed, and the enemy is quickly dispatched.
Stan Lee and Jack Kirby were clearly struggling with ideas for Cap, as these issues feature him battling assassins, a sumo, and some prisoners. With issue 63 the decision was made to tell stories of Cap's exploits during WWII (a decision, I feel, that was for the best). Here we see his origin, earliest battles with the Red Skull, and plenty of Nazis to knock out! These stories are much better than the previous few, and so when, with issue 72, Cap's stories return to the present, the plots greatly improved.
Back in the present, Cap takes on the Sleepers, Batroc the Leaper, MODOK and AIM, Power Man and Swordsman, and many others, all the while beginning his relationship with Sharon Carter, Agent 13. The highlight of this volume is issues 79-81, when the Red Skull returns and battles Captain America using the Cosmic Cube. The art style, and the themes, and the plot are all excellent, and it's refreshing to see a Marvel villain of the 1960s having near omnipotent power. This Epic starts off very poorly unfortunately, but over time it greatly improves in quality, so pick it up if you have the time! (Posted on 04/02/2021)
